Okay, so things are better now. Deep breath in...and out... ahhhh.
So, I work for Sally Foster Fundraising company and I get to go to different schools and get the kids all riled up to raise money for their school. Well today I went to a school in the town that I live in and I was really impressed with what happened during the assembly.
The school had two children stand up front and announce the American flag and the state flag. Then a couple of students presented those flags. After the flags were presented they said the pledge of allegiance. So, I'm sitting there thinking alright, that's cool, now onto the assembly. Not so, after the pledge of allegiance they sang the Star Spangled Banner. How awesome is that.? Ya, that was cool to here a bunch of kids singing that from memory. These kids are, at the oldest 10, singing the Star Spangled Banner better than adults in church on July 4th. I was so impressed and almost got the chills.
If that wasn't enough as I was getting ready to leave they went through the song "God Bless America". It seemed, though, that they were just learning that song, but man, the Star Spangled Banner. How cool is that?
Now let me tell you why I think that is so cool. I fully believe in teaching children patriotism, history, symbolism. I just think, when these kids leave, well most of them, they will know the pledge, they will know the star spangled banner, and some of them will know how to present a flag.
While I was sitting there I remembered the one episode of a Jay Leno (and just so you know, I don't watch him alot), the part called Jay walking, where he goes out into the public and asks random people questions about the government and America. One of the questions was, can you sing the national anthem? I don't know how many people he interviewed, but most of them knew the first five words and then got completely lost. These are adults people, adults. So, you know, sitting there about ready to do an assembly, I was feeling pretty darn good that at least someone somewhere is learning something about America.
